FAQ

What is IB? Is Lutheran Academy (LA) an IB school?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) provides 3 levels of IB curriculum, which are the Primary Years Program (PYP), Middle Years Program (MYP) and Diploma Program (DP), suitable for students aged between 3 and 19 years old. The IB programs emphasize on critical thinking and self-care skills, so that students will become a knowledgeable, balanced, principled and caring person (please visit http://www.ibo.org for more details). The PYP and MYP framework is applicable to any curriculum, and the DP has its own curriculum, with public exams that serve as university entrance tests.

We implement the “Glocalised Curriculum” – studying the local curriculum with reference to the IB framework. Becoming an IB school involves an intricate and rigorous application process, including the installation of facilities and equipment, aligning the school policies with the IB ones (of which a large amount of administrative work is required), completing the IB’s authorization visits etc. LA is now an Authorized School for the Diploma Program, and will apply for candidacy for the PYP and MYP in the coming years. Once authorized, LA will be a through-train IB school.

What is the Medium of Instruction (MOI)?

The MOI and preferred language of communication is English, and Chinese & Culture lessons will be conducted in Putonghua.

What kinds of learning materials are adopted by the school?
We use a variety of resources, including textbooks from other countries, online resources as well as the school-based ones created by our teachers.

How does the school assess the students?

The entire academic year is divided into 6 teaching blocks, where students will inquire around a main theme and each one lasts for about 6 weeks. The school uses continuous assessment, where students will take part in a summative assessment at the end of each teaching block. Assessment tasks can be in the form of projects, reports, presentations or quizzes / tests etc, so that students can acquire different learning skills.

Does the school provide a school bus service?

The school bus service is also tendered annually. The school bus company currently provides 15 routes, covering areas like Yuen Long, Kam Tin, Fairview Park, Palm Springs, Tin Shui Wai, Tuen Mun and East Rail Line (Taipo, Sheung Shui and Fanling) etc.

Does the school offer financial support?

LA believes that financial hardship should not be an obstacle that hinders students’ learning. Therefore, families in need can apply for fee remission after registration. Please visit our website for details (http://www.luac.edu.hk).
