Lutheran missionaries from Germany, Northern Europe and the United States went to China to spread the Word of God in the 19th Century, establishing the Chinese Lutheran Church and Lutheran Theological Seminary. On 27 February 1954, representatives from all Lutheran congregations in Hong Kong gathered at Tao Fung Shan, Shatin to announce the formal establishment of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hong Kong (ELCHK).

Nowadays, ELCHK serves the Hong Kong community through operating 51 churches, 4 community service centres, 1 camp site, 12 primary and secondary schools, 6 kindergartens, 4 learning centres, and overseas missions.

History

Having been supported by the Legislative Council with a grant of HK$280 million in 2008, ELCHK Lutheran Academy (LA) commenced in September 2010 as the only government subsidised through-train IB World School in Hong Kong and China. LA gained the IB authorization to offer the Diploma Programme (DP) in 2014, the Primary Years Programme (PYP) in 2018, and the Middle Years Programme in 2019. The school has undergone rapid development since 2020 across various areas, including curriculum enhancement (offering of IAL in 2022 along with HKDSE, and curriculum articulation), steady boost of student and teacher population, social recognition and student achievements.
